"What Did Our Mamas Do? is a digital production that features five women: Shayla Brown, Shayla Bryant, Nicole Deggins, Dr. Brianne Painia-Hull, and D. Ella Lawson.


The documentary tackles themes of Black motherhood, as well as family and generational birth experiences. The video, produced by A Brown Mother Films first premiered on YouTube on May 22, 2022. The documentary consisted of clips from full-length interviews conducted by the founder of Genesis Birthing and Living, Shayla Brown." ​
​Brown’s inspiration for the documentary was through a conversation with Shayla Bryant about her decision to give birth at home which was based on her mother’s birth experience. From there, “I reviewed other interviews I’d conducted and realized other women had done the same thing or had at least attempted to; myself included even though I never knew my mama’s story until I interviewed her,” Brown said.
